Brenda Montes

Brenda Montes practices immigration law before the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR or Immigration Court), the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Ms. Montes has wide experience in deportation defense, immigration bond hearings, detention cases, consular processing, adjustment of status via family petitions, naturalization, and other immigration relief including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and U-Visas.

Brenda is a passionate advocate for immigrant communities; she has worked with several civil rights organizations throughout California in areas like immigration law, impact litigation and telecommunications policy. Ms. Montes successfully led grassroots campaigns against media personalities who aim to vilify immigrants and thwart humane immigration reform. She is currently an appointed Education Commissioner for the City of San Fernando.

Education

Ms. Montes earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law and a Bachelors’ degree from the California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) in Latin American Studies and Women’s Studies.

At UCLA Law, Ms. Montes was Co-President of La Raza Law Students Association and served as a mentor for the Law Fellows Program. Ms. Montes was also the Policy Director for the National Latina/o Law Students Association (NLLSA) where her primary goal was to expand national support and awareness for the Deferred Action and Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

During her undergraduate career, Ms. Montes was a nationally competitive Varsity debater where she was ranked 13th best in the nation and awarded “Debater of the Year.” Having a strong passion for immigration law early in her education, she wrote her Honors Thesis on “Empathy and the Law: A Case Study on Proposition 187,” where she examined the way negative media representations of immigrants and legislative politics work hand in hand to push inhumane immigration policies.

Previous Experience and Activities

Ms. Montes clerked at several legal immigration organizations such as the Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, Leadership Conference for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California.

Membership

Ms. Montes is currently admitted to the State Bar of California.

Language Proficiency

Ms. Montes is fluent in both Spanish and English.
